Paul Schuchmann, Jr. 87, of rural Arlington, Iowa, entered Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters, Oelwein, on Saturday, March 12, 2011. He died there on Sunday evening, March 13, 2011, from an apparent cerebral hemorrhage.
Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, March 17, 2011 at St. John Lutheran Church, Arlington with Rev. Paul Fohs officiating. Visitation at the church: 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday and for one hour before the service on Thursday at the church. Interment: Taylorsville Cemetery, Arlington, Iowa with Military Honors by the Arlington American Legion Post #219. A Memorial Fund has been established for St. John Lutheran Church, the Arlington American Legion Post #219 and the Arlington EMT's. Paul Schuchmann, Jr. was born on June 23, 1923 in Strawberry Point, Iowa, the son of Paul & Hilda (Schmidt) Schuchmann. He grew up on a farm at Arlington and attended the nearby Weger country school. Paul was confirmed at Emanuel Lutheran Church at Strawberry Point and was a 1941 graduate of Strawberry Point High School. He worked as a farm hand for Lyal MacTaggart from 1941 to 1945 and then served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1947. Paul was employed by Rath Packing Company in Waterloo in 1948 and then by the Iowa Conservation Commission at Backbone State Park between 1948 and 1953. Paul was united in marriage to Bertha Helen Cordes on July 16, 1951 at St. John Lutheran Church in Arlington. Paul began farming at Arlington in 1954. The couple lived in Strawberry Point from the time of their marriage until October 1955 when they moved to their present farm home east of Arlington. Paul farmed from 1954 until he retired in 1989.
Paul was involved in many community and church activities. At St. John Lutheran Church, he served on the council, taught Sunday School and was Sunday School superintendent for 17 years; served as Dubuque Conference Brotherhood president for two terms; served on the board at Bremwood Children's Home at Waverly; was a Fayette County Soil Commissioner for 13 years; and a member of the Fayette County Fair board. Paul also served on the boards of the Starmont Board of Education when it was formed, Arlington State Bank, Arlington Senior Housing, Fayette County Zoning Commission for 9 years, and the Fayette County Mutual Insurance Association for 10 years. He had held offices in the Fayette County Legion and had been a member of the Arlington American Legion Post #219 for 58 continuous years. In 2009 he was named Iowa State Legionnaire of the Year.
Paul is survived by his Wife: Bertha Schuchmann of Arlington; 2 Sons: Kevin Duane Schuchmann (Patti) of Dyersville & Steven Lynn Schuchmann (Ursula) of Arlington; 2 Daughters: Darla Dee Butikofer (Tom) of Elgin & Sue Ellen Becker (Greg) of Waterloo; 8 Grandchildren: Jeffrey & Elizabeth Becker, Willow & Graham Schuchmann, and Sydney, Valerie, Luke & Lance Butikofer; 3 Brothers: Irvin "Bud" Schuchmann (Marian) of Strawberry Point, Melvin Schuchmann (Carole) of Marshalltown & Fred Schuchmann (Lois) of Cedar Rapids and a Sister: Ida Mae Johnson (Art) of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Randy Paul in 1956, his parents and a sister-in-law: Greta Schuchmann.
