Deceased Name: WILLIAM J. YAHNERT, WKYC STAGEHAND; JULIE YAHNERT, CO-FOUNDED LOCAL 883
William J. Yahnert, a retired WKYC television stagehand, died Wednesday, two weeks after the death of his wife, Juliet "Julie" Yahnert, former Stagehands Union Local 27 secretary and co-founder of Theatrical Wardrobe Union Local 883.
Both died at their home in North Olmsted. Mr. Yahnert, 80, suffered a heart attack on March 15, a few hours after his wife died of complications from cancer at age 76. He was unable to attend her funeral on March 18.
"My dad would not have been happy living without her," daughter Jeanne Marie Potter of Indian Wells, Calif., said. "They were attached at the hip. They never spent much time apart in the 54 years they were married."
The husband-and-wife team, who were members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees for more than 40 years, began their affiliation with theatrical labor unions in the 1940s.
Mrs. Yahnert, whose maiden name was Qualiotto, was secretary of Stagehands Local 27 from 1946 until the mid-1960s. Then she worked for Teamsters Local 964 until retiring in 1996. She co-founded Theatrical Wardrobe Union Local 883 under the auspices of the IATSE in 1960 and served as the business agent for wardrobe workers for 39 years. She retired Dec. 31.
Mr. Yahnert joined the Stagehands Union in 1947. From 1953 until retiring in 1983, he worked at WKYC Channel 3 on programs featuring television personalities such as Mike Douglas, Linn "Barnaby" Sheldon, Tom Haley and Del Donahoo.
During World War II, Mr. Yahnert served in the Army in Europe. He participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe, Rhineland and Ardennes campaigns.
In addition to their daughter, the Yahnerts are survived by three grandchildren. Mr. Yahnert also has a surviving brother. Mrs. Yahnert has two sisters who survive.
Services for Mr. Yahnert were Saturday. Donations may be made to the St. Patrick Church Restoration Fund, 3602 Bridge Ave., Cleveland 44113.
Berry Funeral Home of Westlake handled arrangements.
